The American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC) is a small independent agency of the Executive Branch of the United States federal government. The Commission was established in 1923 by Congress at the request of General John J Pershing to honor the accomplishments of the American Armed Forces where they have served since April 6th, 1917 (the date of U.S. entry into WWI) through the erection of suitable memorial shrines; for designing, constructing, operating and maintaining permanent American military burial grounds in foreign countries; for controlling the design of U.S. military monuments and markers in foreign countries by U.S. citizens and organizations, both public and private; and for encouraging maintenance of such monuments and markers by their sponsors. |
